We hope you’re feeling all the love this week, LibraryCall friends!

As we move into the third week of February, we continue to highlight important Black Americans and their stories. This week we’re featuring the story of renowned scientist and astronaut Mae Jemison who became the first African American woman to travel to space in 1992.

Lauren Kratz Prushko tells her fantastic story in Dr. Mae Jemison Orbiting the Earth. You can also share the Spanish version of this story, La Doctora Mae Jemison orbitando la tierra, narrated by Lorena Romero and translated by Lorena Romero and Stephaney Cortes Alvarado.

Spanish and English story covers, both with picture of Mae Jemison in orange space suit and rocket blasting off

To learn more about Mae Jemison, check out this short video from NOVA’s Secret Life of Scientists series. Jemison reflects on her journey, including the moment when she looked down on Earth from space and saw the lights of Chicago, her childhood home.
